Every so often you have an band or group who takes everyone by surprise, completely rattles the foundations of the music industry, and ignites a revolution of sorts. In the 90s, it was Marilyn Manson, whose dark lyrics and creepy persona reached out to a generation of angst ridden kids who were fed up with the bright, happy attitude of the 80s.
But now we have a new group taking the reigns. It's Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, or Odd Future for short. What's so frightening about OF is not their lyrics (because to be honest it's nothing that hasn't ever been heard before), but it's the mainstream appeal that they are garnering, and the fact that only 2 of them are older than 20. Majority of the members are still in high school.
Led by just turned 20 year old Tyler, The Creator, they have put out 8 albums collectively, and 4 mixtapes, all of which are available for free via the groups website. Some of the recurring themes that are prevalent throughout the albums include, but are not limited to, rape, murder, gore, father issues, humor, pop culture, and more.
It's not only groundbreaking to see these kids with so much talent out there accomplishing so much, but also to see the foul shit that escapes from their mouths. I don't know that anyone in their right minds would believe that there are people that young with as many fucked up thoughts that they are spitting over sick beats. It's not only hard to listen to, it's good, which in turn makes everything bearable.
Not only Tyler, but Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy Beats, and everyone else is out there making great rap music, and is overshadowing some of the popular rap that is out there, because they are so left field. If you haven't heard of them yet, there is a good chance that you soon will.
